What is a Virtual Run?

Our first virtual runner, Luen Choo, in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2011.

How does a virtual run work?

A virtual run is a race that you can run anywhere in the world. Simply choose a race distance and register. When race week arrives, go for a run and report back to us with your finish time. You’ll be able to compare your race time to finish times from other competitors around the world!

Why Earth Run?

By signing up for the Virtual Earth Run, you’ll be entered to run with other environmentally-minded people from all around the world toward a common goal. Along the way, you’ll receive training tips and support from Earth Run. This year, all proceeds from the Virtual Earth Run will go to the UN-HABITAT program, a United Nations initiative bringing socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities to the world.

How do I complete my race?

Your race results will qualify as long as you complete your chosen distance:

  1. On foot – You can run, jog, or walk the race distance. You are welcome to use your finish time from another race run during the Virtual Run week.
  2. All at once – Please complete the race distance in one outing rather than breaking it up into multiple sessions. You are welcome to run farther than the chosen distance if you choose. Simply log your full run distance at our race site, and MapMyRun will use your average pace to convert your run to the race distance.
  3. During race week – Please complete your run during the given race period. Online entries will close at midnight on the next day. Please email us at info@earthrun.com if you will be unable to log in and post your finish times before the deadline.
